Weekly Writing Groups

The Writing Center’s writing groups offer weekly time for graduate students to devote to working on their dissertations, theses, or other significant graduate-level writing projects in a supportive environment. Benefits to participating in the Writing Center’s writing group program include access to structured time to facilitate progress on their writing projects, and a community of supportive peers. Participants will see the most benefits if they commit to the group at the beginning of the semester and attend every meeting. Upon registration, participants will receive additional details, including a link for meeting online.

Fall 2024 Graduate Writing Groups

The Writing Center is hosting two virtual writing groups for Fall 2024 (via Zoom):

Thriving as a Graduate Writer: A Reading & Writing Group for New Graduate Students

Beginning Sept. 17 on Tuesdays, 11 a.m.–1 p.m. (limit 20 participants)

This group is open to graduate students from any department who are in their first or second semester of graduate school. Participants will read the book Thriving As A Graduate Writer by Rachael Cayley and meet weekly to discuss a section of the book, then spend time working on any writing projects they have in progress. Because this group depends on participants regularly reading and discussing this text, we will not allow participants to register for the group after it has begun meeting. Registration for this group will close on September 15 . The Writing Center is happy to provide complimentary physical copies of the book; participants who prefer to read online will need to purchase a digital copy on their own.

Writing Together: A Writing Group for All UD Graduate Students

Beginning Sept. 20 on Fridays, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. (no limit on number of participants)

This writing group will meet weekly on Zoom for writers who want the accountability and camaraderie of writing together. The group will not feature a common reader or weekly presentations, although if participants are interested in short discussions of writing topics, that is a possibility. Participants in this group should expect to spend most of the two-hour block working on their own writing projects, with brief check-ins at the start and close of each session.
